LOS ANGELES – Jeff Carroll went 5-6 with a homer and Kyle Owsley struck out seven Gators in six innings as the Golden Eagles hammered San Francisco State, 20-3, at Reeder Field on Friday afternoon.  The contest was the opener of the 2007 CCAA Conference season for both squads.  Cal State L.A. improves to 8-1-1 overall, 1-0 in the CCAA.

Cal State L.A. put up the first two runs of the contest in their half of the first.  Adam Klein scored on a Mike Diaz groundout before Carroll doubled home Kurt Crowell

The Gators took a brief one run lead in the top of the fourth as firstbaseman Jonathan Combs knocked a three run shot to right. 

The Golden Eagles responded with six runs in their half of the inning.  With the bases loaded and no outs, Klein picked up a game-tying RBI on a sacrifice fly scoring Henry ContrerasJack Roche reached on a throwing error by Gator shortstop Derek Simper sending the go-ahead run, Felipe Gallo, who had walked earlier in the inning, home.    Cal State L.A. would go on to score four more runs, including Crowell coming home on an SFSU balk.

Cal State L.A.'s bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Golden Eagles lit up Gator pitching for nine runs on eight hits.  Crowell got the action started, leading the inning off with a single to left, eventually scoring on Contreras' single.  Two runs later, with the Golden Eagles up, 14-3, Klein hit a two-run triple to right center, scoring Fernando Franco and Contreras.  Klein found his way to the plate on Roche's sacrifice fly to right. 

Crowell, in his second at bat of the inning, blasted a two-run shot to right, scoring Brian Hernandez who entered the game as a pinch hitter for Diaz in the previous at-bat.  The Golden Eagle's scoring would end as Contreras singled home Carroll.

Manny Urresti entered the game and pitched two shutout innings for the Golden Eagles, allowing only two hits.  In the top of the ninth, Urresti caught Gators' right fielder James Kono looking, and ended the game by forcing a 1-6-3 double play.

Starter Kyle Owsley picked up the win, his second of the season.

The two teams go at it again tomorrow as the series continues with a doubleheader at Reeder Field.  First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
